A2 Sociology students took part in the 50th Anniversary celebrations of the University of Essex on Thursday 6 November, by attending a one day conference on the Sociology of the Media.
They explored concepts including ‘How powerful is The Media?’ How does the Media influence politics?’ and ‘Does the Media reflect or instigate social change?”. The students worked with Professor Pamela Cox to discuss the nature of audience control over the Media and the process of pitching TV shows, before developing and presenting their own pitch. The winning pitch was put forward by Rebecca Elsey, who devised a programme called ‘Student Swap’ based on the idea of ‘Wife Swap’ but using different types of university students.
This was a successful day in which all students demonstrated an excellent team working, communication and problem solving skills as well as experiencing university style lectures and seminars.
