Introduction

This course is aimed at students who have a passion for sport and are looking to follow a career in sports performance, coaching/teaching, officiating, journalism or medicine. It is a two year course and is equivalent to one A Level. It is designed to be taken as part of a programme of study that includes other appropriate BTEC Nationals or A Levels.

The course uses a combination of assessment styles to help students apply their knowledge to succeed in the workplace and develop study skills to continue on to Higher Education. Students will study each unit in depth to acquire a range of practical and transferrable skills. The range of assessments – both practical and written – help students showcase their learning and achievements to best effect.

The course content will include four units:-

Anatomy and physiology;

Fitness training and programming for health, sport and wellbeing;

Professional development in the sports industry;

Sports psychology.

The units will be assessed on a scale of Distinction*, Distinction, Merit, Pass and Unclassified

Unit 1: Anatomy and Physiology

Students will sit a 1 hour 30 minute exam

Unit 2: Fitness training and programming for health, sport and well-being

A task is set and marked by the exam board and completed under supervised conditions.

Part A: Learners will be given a case study one week before a supervised assessment period in order to carry out preparation.

Part B: The supervised assessment period is 2 hours and 30 minutes as timetabled by the exam board.

In all other units, students are assessed by assignments covering a number of different methods, linked to the theory and practical elements of the course.

Progression

BTECs earn UCAS points and are therefore valued by universities allowing students to further their studies and potentially study BA courses.

Entry requirements

A successful BTEC Level III student will:

  • Have gained 5 GCSE pass grades ranging from grade 4 – grade 9 including English
  • Be able to organize portfolio work for a two-year programme.
  • Be self-motivated and possess good independent study skills
  • Be able to prioritize tasks in order to meet deadlines.
