The green desert, that's what the locals call it. Mile upon mile of featureless moorland, undulating dunes of bog, heather and tussock grass. It is through this pathless wilderness that our intrepid students trudged, slowed by buffeting winds, hail and rain, the cruel remnants of hurricane Gonzalo.

And yet through it all our team laughed and joked. A determined, resilient unyielding line of florescent orange snaking through the muted browns and greens of autumnal wales. Not once did they complain, not once was giving up even countenanced and believe me when I say that many would have sought an easy way out and retreated to the warmth and safety of the minibus.

The assessor, himself a man of cheery disposition and a love of these wet and wild places, commented on the quality of their kit, their training, their time keeping, their enthusiasm and their positivity. The group produced an assured display across all aspects of the expedition and were a credit to themselves and the Sixth Form. They have set a marker to which other groups must aspire, but may not reach, such was their quality.

We now look forward to reviewing the group's presentation and seeing them complete the other sections of the award so that they can collect their gold award.
