“How does language used to describe the past change history?”, “To what extent does mathematics describe the real world?”, “Can art give us knowledge?”
Theory of Knowledge questions designed to provoke thoughtful responses in a critical thinking workshop as Braintree Sixth Form hosted a group of 35 students from Ramsey Academy and Notley High School for a day of progression, critical thinking, linguistics and History of Science workshops. BSF (and ex Ramsey Academy) student, Dominika Plachy introduced the students to the culture and language of her native Hungary and amazed students with her ability to converse and even dream, in four languages. The progression and Higher Education workshop saw students exploring the UCAS (university central admissions service) website and provided advice on how to access more selective courses. In the science workshop Michael Faraday's electric magnetic rotation apparatus was reconstructed. Faraday used a mercury bath to transform electrical energy into mechanical energy, creating the first ever electric motor - the students used more recently designed components to construct their own motors. “A really interesting and enjoyable day that helped me think about what I might do at Sixth Form” (year 10 Notley student).
