20 students from Years 11 and 12 went to the salubrious surroundings of the London Cruise Terminal in Tilbury to hear a series of talks by real-life scientists and engineers working in the chemical field.

A wide range of industries was represented at the meeting and students heard presentations from companies as varied as Synthomer and Cory River Waste. It was very interesting to hear about the huge variety of careers available with science qualifications, and students could ask questions to the presenters about their own experiences in work and the journey they had made to get to their particular job. Talks ranged from engineers researching how to make diesel fuels from waste biomass, to biochemical engineers looking at project managing massive biopharmaceutical plant construction. One thing is for sure; there will always be a demand for trained chemists and engineers – something to think about!
