On Friday 12 July, the Science Faculty hosted a twilight training workshop run by Dr Rizwana Alvi from the Royal Society of Chemistry.

The topic was ‘Microscale Chemistry’ and we were joined by teacher colleagues from Alec Hunter Academy to learn about how to enthuse students of all ages about chemical reactions and interactions but on a very small scale. Doing chemistry with small volumes using simple equipment saves on costs, is more environmentally friendly, allows more students to get hands-on and can teach concepts more effectively. Some of the experiments we were trained to use literally carry out the reaction in two drops of reagent rather than a traditional experiment which may use tens of millilitres each time; over a whole class or faculty, real savings can be made.
