On 17 March 2021, a number of Year 12 students from Braintree Sixth Form, including ourselves, who are interested in a career in healthcare (medicine, veterinary, biomedicine ) received a session from experienced mid-wife Dr Hooks, who lectures at Anglia Ruskin University.

Dr Hooks gave an insightful session into the many complex issues surrounding ethics in medical science. We discussed various ethical situations and our minds were challenged when posed with sensitive ethical decisions.

“If the patient refuses treatment, who has the overriding power?”

“What happens if the patient is under 18?”

Dr Hooks gave incredible feedback and really cultivated and moulded our approach to such situations and gave her own invaluable opinion. Medical exams were also touched on and we were generously taught a helpful structured approach to many of the questions we can expect.

Overall, it was an eye-opening session, and we are unbelievably thankful for Dr Hooks’ time and hope for future collaboration!
