A Level Modern Foreign Languages

Offered in French and Spanish

The aim of the course is to develop the student’s ability to communicate effectively, read and understand texts, write extended essays in the foreign language and develop listening comprehension. The course will be based on life in the present day. Students will develop their knowledge and understanding of themes relating to the culture and society of countries where French is spoken, and their language skills. They will do this by using authentic spoken and written resources in French. 

Topics include aspects of French/Spanish-speaking society: current trends and current issues. As well as artistic culture in the French/Spanish world and aspects of political life in the French/Spanish world.

Two additional topics: One film studied during the first year and a book studied the second year.

Students will sit : Paper 1 ( listening, reading and translation) at 40% of A Level.

Paper 2 : 300 word essay on one book and one film at 30% of A Level.

Paper 3: Oral discussion and presentation at 30% of A Level.

GCSE grade 6 in the relevant language is required. However, students will also be considered if they already have some expertise in the language as a result of home circumstances.
